The oxidizability of silicon carbide is closely related to its own chemical stability. According to thermodynamic calculations, silicon carbide itself is very easy to oxidize, but the time oxidation graph of silicon carbide is parabolic. This is because when the temperature reaches a certain height, the silicon dioxide generated by its oxidation forms a thin film, which gradually hinders the oxidation process. In the oxidation process in the air, when the temperature is 800℃, silicon carbide has already begun to oxidize, and the reaction is slow. As the reaction temperature continues to rise, the oxidation rate increases rapidly.
When the temperature reaches about 1600℃, the oxidation almost stagnates. This is because the generated silicon dioxide layer reaches a certain thickness, which protects silicon carbide and hinders the continued oxidation. The oxidation rate of silicon carbide in oxygen is 1.6 times faster than that in air.
