What is Ferro Titanium Used For?

Ferro titanium (FeTi) is a master alloy of iron and titanium used primarily as a convenient method to introduce titanium into molten steel and iron. Its main uses are:

  1. 1.

    ​Deoxidization and Denitrification:​​ Titanium is a powerful deoxidizer. It removes oxygen and nitrogen from molten steel, preventing gas porosity and improving steel cleanliness, which leads to better surface quality and mechanical properties.

    ​Grain Refinement:​​ Adding titanium to steel forms titanium nitride (TiN) and titanium carbide (TiC) particles. These particles pin the boundaries of austenite grains during high-temperature processing, preventing them from growing too large. A finer grain structure results in stronger, tougher steel.

    ​Stabilizing Stainless Steel:​​ In austenitic stainless steels, titanium is added to stabilize the alloy against "sensitization." It combines with carbon to form TiC, preventing chromium carbides from forming along grain boundaries. This preserves the chromium content in the solution and prevents chromium depletion that leads to corrosion (intergranular corrosion).

    ​Carbon Control:​​ In cast iron, ferro titanium is used to control the graphite structure, promoting the formation of desirable graphite flakes or nodules (in ductile iron) and improving strength.
