Magnesium metal has strong reducing properties, releasing hydrogen when reacting with hot water. When burned, it produces a brilliant white light. Magnesium does not react with fluoride, hydrofluoric acid, or chromic acid, nor does it corrode in caustic alkali solutions, but it readily dissolves in organic and inorganic acids. Magnesium can directly combine with nitrogen, sulfur, and halogens, while remaining largely unaffected by hydrocarbons, aldehydes, alcohols, phenols, amines, fats, and most pharmaceutical oils.
